Movement of the Human’s celebrated choreographer and director Malia Johnston’s (World of Wearable Arts, Belle - A Performance of Air, Auckland Arts Festival) immersive urban dance experienceTōrua arrives in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland for a very limited season. Her work brings together a wealth of incredible dance artists - Levi Siaosi, Sefa Tunupopo, Kia Jewell, Xin Ji, Jemina Smith, Ella Williams, Andre Busby, Petronilla Su'a and Cameron Holland who hail from across Aotearoa New Zealand and Australia.

This stunning dance work will take place over two weekends during April across two of Auckland’s iconic public spaces - Te Komititanga in front of Britomart Station and Aotea Square. Tōrua will gift audiences a journey that is led by the dancers as they move and respond to the urban landscape and use the city as their dance floor.

Accompanied by music composed by Anna Edgington and Eden Mulholland (Ngāti Porou), the soundtrack of Tōrua is integral to the dance work and creates a fully immersive piece. Audiences experience this memorising soundscape via headphones

Tōrua is presented by Movement of the Human and Auckland Live, with support from Britomart, the Auckland Council Whānau and the city centre targeted rate.

 

Key Information:

  • Tōrua is free but a ticket per person is recommended to secure headphones.
  • There will be walk up tickets available on the day on a first in, first served basis.
  • The dancers will take the audience from one location to another within the public spaces so walking shoes are recommended.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a ticket for a free event?

Yes, to get the full Tōrua experience you will need a ticket to secure your headphones. Everyone who has a ticket will receive a pair of headphones to use and instructions on how to use them as you follow the dancers. Book Here


Can I get a ticket and headphones on the day of the show?

Yes, you can, there will be tickets available on the day to experience Tōrua. Please note; there are limited headphones per session available. We recommend you secure your tickets early if you know which sessions you and whānau can attend.


Do I need headphones or can I bring my own?

For the full immersive experience, headphones are highly recommended. Headphones will be supplied at the meeting point, which you can either book online or arrive 15 minutes early to secure a pair. There is a limited amount of headphones available for walk ups based on a first come first served basis. The soundtrack is connected to the headphones to ensure everyone hears the music at the same time. The composition plays through the provided headphones and cannot be connected to any other.


Do I need to create an account on Universe to buy a ticket?

Yes, you need to create an account when booking your free ticket on Universe. Just fill in your first name, last name and email address. 


If I need to cancel my tickets, what do I do?

  • After booking the tickets, you will receive an email confirmation.
  • In the email,  click Manage Order, which will take you to your Account.
  • Once signed in, click the drop-down menu on the top right corner.
  • Then click My Tickets.
  • Click More on the ticket to the event you wish to cancel or change.
  • Then click either Change date to choose another performance date (please note this is subject to availability) or Cancel order if you are no longer attending.

Where do we meet?

Te Komititanga - meet at the Quay Street end of Te Komititanga

Aotea Square – meet inside the Aotea Centre, on level 3 next to the Box Office at the main entrance


Is this suitable for all ages?

Yes, the experience is suitable for all ages - when booking ensure you secure your ticket for everyone who needs a headsphone set.


What to wear?

Come prepared to walk around the Square where your session is being held. We recommend wearing comfortable shoes.


Will this go ahead in the rain?

In the case of heavy rain making the ground unsafe for our dancers to perform, the event will be cancelled, and all ticket holders will be contacted.
