The Auckland Youth Orchestra presents another exciting symphony concert.
Sibelius: Impromptu for Strings
Vaughan Williams: Oboe concerto in A minor (soloist: Alex Wu)
Tchaikovsky: Symphony No.6 (Pathétique)
The concert opens with a short, gentle work evoking images of the natural wonders of Finland by its most famous composer, Sibelius.
Young oboist Alex Wu performs Vaughan Williams’ oboe concerto, a masterpiece for the instrument with its glorious melodies, and virtuosic final movement.
Drama abounds after the interval in Tchaikovsky’s famous 6th symphony. This emotion-packed work draws an impassioned performance from these outstanding young musicians.
Oboist Alex Wu is AYO’s principal oboe. He has received several prestigious awards and was the winner of AYO’s 2024 Soloist Competition.
Antun Poljanich, who won a scholarship for a three-year Master Course in Conducting at the Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatory in Leningrad, has conducted AYO since 1999.
